COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

We are all part of a community, sometimes many communities. And I believe we have a social responsibility to contribute to our communities in whatever ways we can — in service, kindness, and creativity. Over the past few years, I've volunteered with many nonprofits, supported many causes, and launched initiatives in support of causes I care deeply about. These are some of the organizations I support and initiatives I've led.

Lasagna Love | Lasagna Maker + Deliverer | May 2021-Present

When I'm matched with someone in need of a fresh-from-the-oven lasagna, I inquire about their needs/favs/allergies, arrange a day and time for delivery, get to cookin', and deliver a meal made with love — straight from the oven and straight to their door.

Locations: Central Virginia and San Francisco Bay Area

Associação Ninovan | Fundraising Support + Storyteller | September 2020-September 2021

I helped this Azorean horse rescue with storytelling, donor communications, and fundraising initiatives. In 2021, after the sanctuary suffered immense storm damage that destroyed all of their stables, I led an initiative to raise rebuilding funds. The fundraising goal was equivalent to $5,000, though we raised a total of $6,700 — and rebuilding is now underway.

  • Jefferson Pharmacy | COVID Vaccination Clinic Volunteer | Feb. 2021-May 2021

I provided community support during Jefferson Pharmacy’s vaccination clinics in Fluvanna County (Virginia). This included helping folks with their intake paperwork, providing aftercare support and resources, and being a liaison between medical and volunteer staff.

  • Town of Scottsville (VA) | Writer + Grant Proposal Editor | January 2018-October 2019

I helped the Vice Mayor and the head of the Arts + Culture Committee with messaging and communications, ranging from social media copy to grant writing. I also helped draft the grant proposal for the Bama Works Fund Grant, which the town was awarded in June 2018.

  • Wimberley Flood | Search + Rescue, Editor | May 2015-Nov. 2017

When devastating floods hit Central Texas over Memorial Day Weekend 2015, I joined a search and rescue team searching for survivors along the Blanco. While searching, I found countless personal artifacts, including a woman’s purse, passport, and slides of an infant’s first steps. I made it my mission to return such treasures to the folks who lost everything. I also worked with an area chef to deliver hot meals to search and rescue teams. After the cleanup, I helped a woman who lost three loved ones in the floods commemorate a mother and her children in a book, which was published in 2017.

  • CareBOX | CareDRIVER + Fundraising Support | November 2015-March 2017

I helped curate, fundraise, and deliver everyday items that cancer patients requested while undergoing treatment.

  • Seedling Foundation | Mentor January 2013-June 2013

I mentored an elementary student who had an incarcerated parent, meeting with her weekly at her school to provide guidance, support, and companionship while her parent was still incarcerated.

  • Make-A-Wish Foundation | Austin Over the Edge | 2014, 2012

While editing Austin Lifestyle Magazine, we partnered with local organizations to raise more than $3,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation over the course of two years.

Groceries to Go, Meals on Wheels August 2009-August 2011

I volunteered with two elderly clients over the course of two years, taking one client on weekly outings to the grocery store, pharmacy, and on other errands. I took the other client to the food bank biweekly and to doctor appointments as needed.
